Late Dr Poornima Nair’s son pays tribute to nurses and doctors for looking after his mum by raising £12,000 for them: Funeral today

STOCKTON-ON-TEES May 20: Malayalee GP, Poornima Nair (56), who has been working at the Station View Medical Centre in Bishop Auckland in County Durham passed away on 12th May 2020 at North Tees Hospital in Stockton-on-Tees on 12th May 2020 after a long battle with Covid-19. The funeral of Dr Poornima Nair will be held tomorrow (21st May 2020) at Stockton Crematorium, Junction Road, Stockton-on-Tees TS19 9NA

In a tribute to his mother, Varun decided to make one of his mother’s final wishes come true. One of Dr Poornima Nair’s wishes which she communicated to her husband Dr Balapuri Shlokarth, while in the intensive care unit was to do something to show their appreciation for the care being provided by the nurses and doctors.

To realise mother’s wishes Varun set up a Just Giving page for anyone to contribute as part of a tribute in her memory. Varun asked to raise only £2,000 but the community gave him £12,000 and more pouring in which shows how the doctor was loved by the community she served.

“The funds raised in memory of Dr Poornima will be used for the direct well being of the ITU staff and doctors at the North Tees Hospital in Stockton-on-Tees”, Varun told this website.

“This is a token of the family’s heartfelt appreciation for the care given to my mother during the 46 days battle with COVID-19 at University Hospital of North Tees & Hartlepool”, Varun said.

“As a family we have seen how tirelessly and selflessly the staff and doctors in the ITU at University Hospital of North Tees are working. We have seen first hand the exemplary courage and determination to try to save her and all their other patients that they have made better”.

“We saw their shared pain and heartbreak when they were unable to save her life. We will forever be grateful for the excellent care she was given throughout her time in the ITU, Varun said.

Dr Poornima Nair devoted her working life to the care of her patients. This was evidenced by the hundreds of tributes from her patients and friends, she was a caring and compassionate doctor.

Now they have come out to show their love and appreciation by being part of realising one of her fianl wishes to say a thank you to those doctors and nurses who cared for her while she was battling Covid,

Dr Poornima Nair, daughter of Mrs Sarala Nair and Late PK Nair, is from Cherukunnam in Kannur in Kerala. Dr Poornima has a brother who is in the US. Dr Balapuri Shlokarth is from Delhi. Varun is Maths graduate working for a financial company in London.

Dr Poornima, who had her schooling done at The Frank Anthony Public School in Delhi, studied at the University College of Medical Sciences in New Delhi and worked at the famous Safdarjang Hospital prior coming to the UK.
