LONDON March 16: Overseas bricklayers and carpenters will be able to get work visas more easily in the UK after the government updated its shortage occupation list.

The government updates the list based on advice from an independent group of experts – called the Migration Advisory Committee.

At the Budget in March 2023, the government accepted the committee’s advice to add five construction sector occupations to the list:

Bricklayers and masons
Roofers, roof tilers and slaters
Carpenters and joiners
Other construction and building trades
Plasterers

The government is also having a wider review of the list, which will conclude in autumn 2023.

Government advisors in the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) looked at 26 occupations in construction and hospitality, and recommended five for inclusion on the shortage occupations list.

The committee did not recommend any hospitality occupations be included, although it said Brexit and the pandemic had “significant effects” on both sectors.

The shortage occupation list allows companies to get visas for staff being paid the lower threshold of £20,480 a year. The salary needed to obtain a “skilled worker” visa is £25,600.
