Malappuram native doctor from Plymouth who went for a swim dies in “tragic accident”

PLYMOUTH March 1: A Keralite doctor, based in Plymouth in the UK, has died after getting into trouble in the sea off Plymouth.

The deceased has been identified as Dr Rakesh Vallittayil, who works as Medical imaging technologist at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.

Rakesh’s Facebook page too has been inundated with condolence messages. Rakesh’s cousin, who is also in the UK, confirmed the news with this website.

According to police reports, a 41-year-old man was rescued from the water near Tinside Lido at Plymouth Hoe by one of the lifeboats. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead and police said it appeared to have been “a tragic accident”.

Two lifeboats and a Ministry of Defence boat started a search for the man after the alarm was raised at about 13:30 GMT on Sunday.

It comes as many people have flocked to beauty spots to enjoy the sunny weather. The sea temperature level in Plymouth was at 9.5C.

Close family source told this website that Rakesh went out on Sunday with two other Malayalee families and he decided to go for a swim when got into trouble. He was rescued but later died due to reportedly hypothermia and cardiac arrest.

Rakesh is said to have arrived in the UK at the end of 2020. He has been previously working in Dubai at the prestigious Rashid Hospital as a Medical Imaging Technologist.

Rakesh was preparing for his family to join him in the UK but fate played truant.

Rakesh is a native of Tanur in Malappuram and leaves behind wife Sharon Rakesh and three young children who are all in Kerala.

The couple had graduated as Homeopathic doctors from Athurasramam NSS Homoeo Medical College in Kottayam.

The body is in the process of being repatriated to Kerala for the last funeral rites.
