CROYDON April 23: Mastering handwriting is an important aspect of a child’s early development, as it promotes physical, cognitive, and emotional growth, while also preparing them for future academic success. Cumnor House School in Croydon aims to champion, nurture, and celebrate writing by hand which according to them also encourages the early adoption of keyboard skills. Thus they celebrate the visual art of handwriting through a Handwriting Competition, which is a much sought after event in the school among children in Years 1-6.

Rose Fathima, a Malayalee girl from Croydon, has won the first prize in the Independent Schools Association (ISA) national handwriting competition in March 2024. Rose is a Year Two pupil at Cumnor House Girls School in Purley, Surrey. She lives in Purley, Croydon with her parents, Badusha Karim and Dr Reeja Rajab.

All participants were asked to meticulously copy out a poem in their best handwriting, ensuring they utilised the correct layout. Teachers then carefully selected the finest handwriting from each class, who were entered into the following categories: Year 1, Year 2, Year 3-4, and Year 5-6.

“This competition provided an amazing opportunity for Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils to passionately practice and showcase their handwriting skills, and they certainly delivered”, said the school in a social media release.

Rose Fathima is passionate in reading and writing. Her hobbies are reading books and writing poems, and she enjoys her school drama lessons and sports activities. She also loves the playtime with her little brother.

She was all excited after winning the competition and she sees this as a step towards following it up with taking part in more competitions. Rose thanks her teachers for their support.
