Keralite in UK recognised as Coronation Champion: Coronation of King Charles III today

LONDON May 5: A Keralite, who is a well-known local-hero within the Banbury community is amongst those being recognised as Coronation Champions in awards to celebrate the work of extraordinary volunteers across the UK. Banbury is in Oxfordshire, South East England.

Prabhu Natarajan is amongst 500 people who have been handed-picked by judges for the awards, which have been organised by the Royal Voluntary Service to honour the service of King Charles and the Queen Consort.

Since moving to Banbury in March 2020 Prabhu Natarajan has worked tirelessly to help others, especially those who are struggling to feed their families. He works up to six days a week in the care sector, alongside running The Lunch Box Project.

Thousands of people aged from 14 to 103 from across the UK were nominated for the awards. The Queen Consort presided over the judging panel.

All 500 Coronation Champions will receive a specially designed, official Coronation Champions pin and a signed certificate from His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort. They are also being invited to attend one of the official Coronation celebrations.

Prabhu is from Olavakkode in Palakkad and Shilpa is a native of Alappuzha in Kerala. Addhu, the only son, is eight years old.

He said: “It would have never ever happened without the support of amazing People of Banbury”.

Prabhu Natarajan founded his charity, The Lunch Box Project, shortly after moving to Banbury during the first COVID lockdown. He started by donating boxes of food to families in need in his local area and has since created a social media page where people can message him about food package deliveries. Prabhu and his team of hardworking volunteers, which includes his wife and family, have spent many hours over the last two years hosting free events for the people of Banbury to enjoy and donating thousands of food packages to those in need.

The coronation of King Charles III takes place on Saturday 6 May, kicking off a weekend of events and celebrations in the UK. Conducted by the archbishop of Canterbury at Westminster Abbey, hundreds of thousands of people are expected to head to central London for the occasion.

For people in the UK, the ceremony on Saturday will be broadcast on BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Radio 3, BBC World Service and BBC Sounds, ITV and Sky News. Meanwhile, dozens of big screens will show the coronation in parks and other public spaces.

With Monday May 8 declared a Bank Holiday due to the coronation, the weekend will see a series of ceremonial, celebratory and community events between Saturday 6th and Monday 8th May 20231.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to visit the capital city to experience this unique and historic occasion, with millions more watching from home, across the UK and around the globe2.

There will also be various activities hosted by community organisations during the weekend.
