Vikram Doraiswami to replace Gaitri Issar Kumar as new Indian High Commissioner in UK

LONDON July 5: Indian Ambassador to Bangladesh Vikram Doraiswami is expected to take over as Indian envoy to the UK by replacing the present Indian High Commissioner Gaitri Issar Kumar, news reports said.

Vikram Doraiswami is a 1992 batch Indian Foreign Service officer who has served as Indian ambassador to Uzbekistan, South Korea and served in US as well as private secretary to prime minister.

In his early 50s, Vikram who has been in Dhaka since 2020, would be among the youngest High Commissioners to the UK.

The Indian Journalists’ Association members organised a farewell dinner for the Indian High Commissioner Gaitri Issar Kumar, who superannuated on June 30.

According to Hindustan Times, Vikram Doraiswami’s appointment as ambassador to UK comes after the Modi government went through a several month-long deep selection process which including looking at the possibility having a political appointee as envoy to London due to the various political issues still brimming between India and the UK.

A professional and hardworking diplomat who can speak Chinese, Vivek Doraiswami has been central to close bilateral relationship with Dhaka with the officer pushing for cementing ties with Bangladesh through infrastructure and defence cooperation.

Vivek Doraiswami as Indian ambassador to South Korea was one of the key players to get KIA motors into India and joint development of K-9 155 mm self-propelled howitzer in India.
