Nurse in India duped of Rs1.17 lakh on World Nurses Day by fraudster from UK impersonating as doctor

MUMBAI May 15: A 29-year-old Indian nurse at Seven Hills Hospital, lost Rs1.17 lakh in an online fraud after she accepted a friend request from a fraudster impersonating as a doctor.

Mumbai Police said the fraudster duped the nurse by luring her with a surprise gift parcel for ‘World Nurses Day’ on May 12.

She realised she was being duped when the fraudster repeatedly demanded money for various reasons to get the parcel released from Delhi Airport Customs where he said he had been held for carrying undeclared UK pounds.

The nurse transferred the money when a fake customs official claimed that she would be booked if she does not pay the penalty.

The fraud was executed within a few hours after the nurse accepted the friend request after he introduced himself as Dr Elvis Smith.

In the complaint, the nurse said, “The person said he wanted send me a surprise gift for World Nurses Day.”

She then got a WhatsApp message from Jack Lawson saying he had to pay Rs 25,000 for his release and demanded Rs 75,000 to pre-empt any case against me. I realised I was getting duped when I was made to transfer Rs17000 for converting the UK pounds into Indian rupees,” said the nurse in her complaint.
