Healthcare Visa holders will be able to work unlimited hours for second employer until Aug 27

LONDON March 7: The Home Office has announced that from Monday 27 February, Health care Visa holders will be able to work an uncapped amount of additional hours for a second employer until August 27, 2023.

The announced change only applies to Skilled Workers on a Health care Visa category which mainly applies to qualified doctors, nurses, health professionals and health and care professionals working in adult social care.

However, the Healthcare Visa holder may need to apply to update his/her visa to do additional paid work. This will depend on the type of work he/she is doing and the hours the visa holder is going to work.

If the Healthcare Visa holder’s extra job (second work) is in the same profession and at the same professional level as their main job or in a shortage occupation list then he/she doesnt need to update his/her visa with the Home Office.

Check if your job is on the list of:

healthcare and education shortage occupations

all other shortage occupations

However, Health care Visa holders need to update their visa with the Home Office if he/she is going to either:

get a job that’s not an eligible Health and Care Worker visa job or in a shortage occupation

work more than 20 hours in a job in a shortage occupation that’s not eligible for a Health and Care Worker visa

To apply, you’ll need to:

get a new certificate of sponsorship from your second employer

include a letter with your application explaining that you want to change your current permission to stay

Apply to update your visa.

This exemption is in place for six months and will be reviewed in August 2023. Current guidance indicates that from 27 August 2023 the exemption will end and all Skilled Workers, including Health and Care visa holders, will only be able to do up to 20 hours of supplementary work.
