No Overall Majority in Croydon Council Local Elections as Manju and Nikhil Hold Seats

CROYDON May 10: Croydon Council has returned a hung council following the 2026 local elections, with no party securing an overall majority. Malayalee councillors Nikhil Sherine Thampi and Manju Shahul-Hameed successfully retained their seats, while independent mayoral candidate Jose Joseph was defeated in the mayoral race.<

Executive Mayor Jason Perry of the Conservatives secured a second term as Croydon’s directly elected mayor, despite his party failing to gain a majority in the council chamber.

The new composition of Croydon Council is:

  • 30 Labour councillors
  • 28 Conservatives
  • 8 Greens
  • 2 Liberal Democrats
  • 2 Reform UK councillors

Voter turnout reached 41.02%, with 286,933 ballots cast, making it one of the largest local election counts in London.

Under Croydon’s Executive Mayor system, Mayor Jason Perry continues to hold primary executive authority over the council, even though the Conservatives do not control a majority of seats.
