Jose Kattady Lone Malayalee Reform Winner as Record Number of Keralites Contest Local Elections
LONDON May 9: Jose Antony Kattady emerged as the only Malayalee candidate to secure victory for Reform UK in the English local elections, winning the Lee Chapel North ward seat in Basildon Council with a commanding performance. Kattady polled 1,420 votes, accounting for 43 percent of the vote share, comfortably defeating Labour candidate Terry Webb, who secured 1,075 votes. Five candidates contested the ward election. Labour candidate Juna Sathian also suffered defeat in Newcastle’s Blakelaw and Cowgate ward as Reform UK swept all three available seats.
However, the elections also saw victories for some Malayalee candidates from other major parties.
Sajish Tom secured a notable victory for Labour in Hampshire County Council, winning with 1,515 votes ahead of Reform UK candidate Duncan Philip Stone.
In Bromley Council’s Plaistow ward, Alwin Puthenpurakal was elected as a Local Conservative councillor with 1,148 votes. His running mate Panos Robert Papayannakos also won the second seat.
The results reflect the growing influence of Reform UK across England, with the party making major gains in several councils. Although only Jose Antony Kattady managed to win under the Reform banner among Malayalee candidates, the elections highlighted increasing political participation from the Malayalee community across different parties in local British politics.
