KALA to showcase Thiruvathira and mural art workshop at Asian heritage month at Redbridge Library on July 22

LONDON July 18: The South Asian Heritage Month which looks to commemorate, mark and celebrate South Asian cultures, histories, and communities is being held in the UK from Tuesday 18 July to Thursday 17 August at Redbridge Library, Clements Road, Ilford, Essex, IG1 1EA. The month seeks to understand the diverse heritage and cultures that continue to link the UK with South Asia.

It’s the perfect time to learn more about the heritage and history of the eight countries of South Asia: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives and Sri Lanka.

The theme for 2023 is ‘Stories to Tell’. It’s crucial to allow people to share their own stories, and this occasion offers an opportunity to showcase what being South Asian in the 21st century entails.

Thiruvathira

As part of the South Asian Heritage Month, volunteers from KALA (Kerala Arts and Literary Association) will conduct a workshop on Thiruvathira. Thiruvathira is an ancient dance from Kerala state in southern India. This traditional group dance is performed in Kerala during festivities. Learn about this energetic dance in this entertaining and engaging workshop.

Mural art (Chuvar Chitram)

Volunteers from KALA will also be showcasing mural art from Kerala at the event. The mural discussion will be led by Sethulekshmy who will be joined by Dr Sasibhooshan, historian and mural art expert.

Mural art (Chuvar Chitram) from Kerala, in southern India, is an ancient and amazing art on temple walls depicting ancient stories from Indian mythology. Explore the magic of this ancient art form and learn to create your own masterpiece.
