LONDON Aug 10: The prestigious Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in London, UK’s largest centre for Indian classical arts, recently conducted a remarkable evening in honour of India’s 76th Independence. The event not only paid homage to India’s historic milestone but also underlined Bhavan’s mission of fostering cultural relations.

The Indian Independence Celebration was organised under the direction of Dr Nanda Kumar, a distinguished Sanskrit scholar who recently received the Kings Award for his years of dedicated and successful service at the Bhavan. The evening programme consisted of brief addresses from the Chairman as well as the special guests including Vikram Doraiswami, Indian High Commissioner to London.

The High Commissioner highlighted how India managed to survive as a democracy not just in name only but a functioning and vibrant one that guarantees Freedom of Speech, Independence of the Judiciary, free and fair elections etc. He commended the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for its inclusive approach vis-a-vis the diverse and varied linguistic and musical traditions of India.

Lord Loomba in his speech mindfully touched on the Independence Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi, Pundit Nehru and Sardar Patel etc giving them all credit for their able and purposeful leadership and sacrifices which brought about Indian independence 76 years ago.

The session was followed by a music and dance session which consisted of colourful and stunning musical and dance performances by well-trained and experienced groups of youngsters. The musical performances triggered a nostalgic impact among those of Indian descent.

India’s political independence, matched by economic independence, provides all its citizens with a stake in the country, where the diaspora Indians can play a constructive role in shaping India’s destiny.
