ILFORD June 10: A three-year-old girl who dangled from a window ledge for at least nine minutes above a busy East London high street was dramatically rescued by a police officer and a Keralite father-of-two in a heart-stopping operation witnessed by dozens of onlookers.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon on Ilford High Road, where the child was seen clinging precariously to a window above a pawnbroker’s shop. Crowds gathered below in horror as the youngster struggled to hold on while attempts were made to reach her.

The civilian hero, Mohamed Jesil, originally from Kerala and now working as a restaurant manager in London, rushed from his nearby home after hearing the alarm being raised.

“I ran out on instinct,” Jesil told Metro. “I’m a dad of twins aged five months, and as a dad I just reacted. I wasn’t scared, I just didn’t think. I’m not a hero, I just did it as a dad seeing a child in trouble.”

Footage shared on social media showed bystanders shouting “Hurry up!” as a woman leaned from a nearby window trying to reach the child. Meanwhile, a Metropolitan Police officer positioned himself on a lower ledge beneath the girl but was unable to reach her safely.

Realising every second counted, Jesil climbed across rooftops to join the rescue effort. As the girl’s grip began to weaken, he and the officer positioned themselves directly below her.

Moments later, gasps echoed through the crowd as the child lost her hold and fell.

In a remarkable last-second rescue, Jesil caught the falling girl while the police officer steadied both of them on the narrow ledge. The crowd erupted in cheers and applause as the child was brought to safety.

“Well done!” one spectator shouted, while another exclaimed, “The baby got saved, my God.”

Jesil later revealed that his background in cricket may have helped him make the crucial catch.

“I played cricket in India, so that may have helped with my catching,” he said. “I just knew I had to concentrate.”

After the rescue, the relieved youngster reportedly gave Jesil a heartfelt hug.

“There was massive relief when I managed to catch her,” he said. “She didn’t say anything, just gave me a big hug. I’m so happy it could help.”

The girl’s father described both rescuers as “amazing heroes” and expressed his family’s gratitude.

“They were both amazing. They were heroes. We are so relieved. They saved our child,” he said. “She is fine thanks to them. We are very grateful. She will be going to school again today and we would like to say thanks to those people.”

He added that Jesil had been a complete stranger to the family before the rescue.

While the circumstances that led the child onto the ledge remain unclear, her father praised her determination, saying: “She’s very strong.”
