From Student Visa to Ballot Box: Keralite Woman Eyes Historic Run in London Elections
LONDON April 7: In a remarkable turn of events, a young woman from Kerala who arrived in the UK on a student visa is now stepping into the political spotlight of London. Jyothi Elsa James, a native of Kayamkulam, is set to contest the upcoming council elections, breaking barriers as a candidate of Reform UK.
What makes her journey extraordinary is this: Jyothi has successfully cleared the intense vetting process of a major UK political party—something rarely, if ever, achieved by someone still on a student visa.
Backed by the party leadership led by Nigel Farage, her candidacy has already sparked attention. The crucial electoral battle is scheduled for May 7.
But Jyothi is not just contesting—she is campaigning with a purpose. Determined to become a voice for expatriates, especially international students, she wants to bring lived experience into local governance. “Only someone who has faced these struggles can truly represent students,” she says.
Her story is one of grit. Arriving in the UK at 30 with an education loan and a dream, Jyothi balanced studies with part-time work, navigating the tough realities of student life. Today, at 33, she works as a retail store manager and carries experience across business, HR, fashion, and even the NHS.
Academically, she stood out—earning a Master’s in International Business and a nomination for the prestigious “Sergio Obando – Student of the Year” award.
Yet, it’s her human touch that defines her journey. As a volunteer “Loneliness Coordinator” in Harrow, she spent time with isolated individuals, bringing companionship to those in need—an experience she calls deeply fulfilling.
Despite having no prior political background, Jyothi is undeterred. “Opportunities are everywhere in London. We should never limit ourselves,” she says, sending a powerful message to students and the Malayali diaspora.
Her selection itself came as a surprise — even to her. With strict vetting rules where even minor infractions can derail a candidacy, expectations were low. But Jyothi defied them all, making her family beam with pride.
Daughter of James Thomas and Elsie James of Alappuzha, and wife of Chintu Varghese, Jyothi represents a new kind of candidate—one shaped not by political legacy, but by real-world struggle and ambition.
