Indian Student Stabbed To Death in UK; Five Arrested and Released on Bail as Police Seek Information

LONDON, Dec 1: Vijay Kumar Sheoran, a 30-year-old Indian student, was fatally stabbed in Worcester, UK, on November 25, West Mercia Police said in a statement.

Police reported that five men were arrested after Sheoran was found earlier that morning on Barbourne Road with critical injuries. All five have since been released on bail as the incident is now being treated as a murder investigation.

According to multiple reports and a statement by Haryana MLA Sunil Satpal Sangwan, Sheoran was originally from Charkhi Dadri in Haryana. He was taken to hospital after being discovered with severe wounds but died later the same day.

In a post on X, Sangwan expressed grief over the killing, writing: “Deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Vijay Kumar Sheoran, an Indian student from Village Jagrambas, District Charkhi Dadri (Haryana), who lost his life following a brutal stabbing incident in Worcester, United Kingdom.” He urged the Indian government to intervene promptly and assist the family, particularly in securing the repatriation of Sheoran’s remains.

Media reports state that Sheoran had resigned from his job with the Central Board of Excise and Customs earlier this year to pursue studies in the UK. He was enrolled at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol.

Sheoran’s family has appealed for diplomatic support to ensure a comprehensive investigation and help bring his body back to India.

Detective Chief Inspector Lee Holehouse said: “First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim. I know this incident has shocked the local community. I’d like to reassure you that we’re working hard and at pace to understand what happened yesterday, and that at this stage there is nothing to suggest any wider risk to the public.”

A police cordon remains in place on Barbourne Road as officers continue evidence collection and enquiries. Police presence in the area is expected to remain heightened. Anyone with information is urged to contact officers at 01905 331099 or share details anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or via their website.

In an update issued on November 28, West Mercia Police reiterated their appeal for information, confirming that officers found Sheoran around 4:15 a.m. on November 25 with serious injuries. “Five men were arrested on suspicion of murder and are now on bail as the investigation continues,” the statement said.

DCI Holehouse added that officers have been carrying out extensive enquiries to determine the events that led to the attack. “Officers will remain on Barbourne Road over the weekend… this is to continue gathering evidence and the public should not be alarmed,” he said. “Anyone with information, however small, is urged to come forward.”

Ravi Kumar, Sheoran’s elder brother, has written to India’s External Affairs Minister requesting assistance in repatriating the body. “Our family is devastated by this unfortunate incident,” he wrote, appealing for help with the legal, procedural, and financial challenges involved in returning his brother’s remains to India. He requested that the Indian High Commission in the UK be directed to provide full support with documentation, coordination, and transportation.
