Adani Gets Clearance for Rs 136-Crore Luxury Airport Hotel in Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Nov 25: Adani Airport Holdings Ltd has received environmental clearance from India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for a Rs 136-crore luxury hotel project within the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport complex.

The approval followed a detailed assessment by the ministry’s Expert Appraisal Committee (Infra-2) at its August meeting, according to official sources. The project spans over 8,000 square metres inside the airport premises and will feature a 240-room five-star hotel with dining facilities offering 660 seats.

Currently used as an open parking area operated by the Adani Group, the land was transferred to the company under a long-term concession agreement with the Airports Authority of India in January 2021.

The proposed five-storey structure will rise to 23 metres high and include two basement levels for parking, a ground floor, and four upper floors, with a total built-up area of nearly 34,000 square metres. Treated water from an on-site sewage treatment plant will supply approximately half of the hotel’s daily water need, while solid waste will be processed through organic waste converters and authorised recyclers.

Authorities confirmed that about 40 trees at the site will be transplanted elsewhere within the airport, and that the layout includes a planned green belt. The design incorporates energy-efficient features aimed at cutting consumption by up to 20 percent.

The ministry noted that the project site does not fall within any eco-sensitive or forest zone and faces no legal disputes. The clearance was issued at the central level due to the temporary absence of the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority in Kerala.

Construction is expected to take three years. Officials estimate the development could generate around 300 direct and 900 indirect jobs and enhance passenger amenities while boosting Thiruvananthapuram’s tourism potential.

A source described the new hotel as part of Adani Group’s larger “City Side Development” plan for the airport. The facility will cater mainly to air travellers and foreign vessel crew members arriving at the nearby Vizhinjam port, which is also operated by the group.

In a related move, the union government recently allocated an immigration counter at the Vizhinjam International Seaport to facilitate crew-change operations, potentially driving further regional development.
