MAUK’s first water treatment plant in Kerala inaugurated: Gifted to flood hit village in Alappuzha

By A Staff Reporter

LONDON April 1: Malayalee Association of the UK (MAUK)’s first water treatment plant in Kerala was officially inaugurated on Saturday, 30 March 2019 by G Venugopal, Allappuzha District Panchayat president. The meeting was chaired by Praveen Mohan, KBCL Chairman.

Following the floods that ravaged Kerala in August 2018, MAUK decided to do something helpful for the people who had to suffer the worst. Therefore, they chose to construct a water treatment plant in a remote village called Monkombu in Kuttanad region of Alapuzha district.
There is no road access to the village and even construction materials were transported by boat.
Following the floods, MAUK had embarked on a charity fund raising drive. Having given clear mandate from both donors and members alike, MAUK decided to engage in projects that MAUK can monitor directly.
MAUK joined arms with Kerala Vision- a leading and reputable media company in Kerala – to assist communities where infrastructure was severely damaged or destroyed.
Based on the feedback from Kerala Vision staff scattered across Kerala, MAUK decided to undertake construction of a number of water treatment plants in remote villages.
While MAUK provided the financial assistance, volunteers of Kerala Vision will oversee the day-to-day aspects of the construction. It was decided that once completed, the plant will be handed over to the local Panchayath Office to manage and maintain.
MAUK had raised £16,489 from 241 donors and £3,552 through gift aid. In addition, 11 year old Ryan Kunnummal from Birmingham also raised over £650 through his sponsorme page.
MAUK changed the Onam celebrations in 2018 into a fundraising event and have raised in the region of £10,000 from 217 donations received for this event.
