Final Test match between England and India to be held in Manchester from today cancelled

MANCHESTER Sept 10: The fifth Test match between India and England, scheduled to begin today, has been cancelled, England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed on Friday.

There was uncertainty regarding the fifth and final Test match after another member of Team India’s support staff tested positive for Covid on Thursday.

But all Indian players had returned negative RT-PCR results on Thursday and it was expected that the match will be held as per the schedule but it wasn’t to be.

“Following ongoing conversations with the BCCI, the ECB can confirm that the fifth LV= Insurance Test between England and India Men due to start today at Emirates Old Trafford, will be cancelled,” ECB said in a media statement.

“Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp, India are regrettably unable to field a team,” the statement further read.

India were leading the five-match series 2-1 after a thumping victory at The Oval where the visitors won the match by 157 runs.

In a ECB statement on their website it wrote the following.

“Following ongoing conversations with the BCCI, the ECB can confirm that the fifth LV= Insurance Test between England and India Men due to start today at Emirates Old Trafford, will be cancelled.

“Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp, India are regrettably unable to field a team.

“We send our sincere apologies to fans and partners for this news, which we know will cause immense disappointment and inconvenience to many.

Further information will be shared in due course”.
