LONDON March 27: With the UK government deciding to deport those who are breaking the law from the UK at any cost, the Home Office raid, which has been increased from January 2023, has become a daily occurrence.

Last week, three Keralites were arrested during an immigration raid in Stoke on Trent. Two student visa holders and a person on a dependent visa were brought to a detention centre.

The Home Office has decided to deport them back to Kerala. A Keralite lawyer from the UK is making all efforts to help them after their relatives contacted him. Since they were working at the Malayalee care agency in Stoke on Trent, it is likely that the two agencies will now be fined for breaking the law.

Reports say that last year, a series of Home Office raids were conducted in Stoke-on-Trent, following which a large number of students had left the country. However, the Home Office raids have returned to Stoke-on-Trent with students started coming again in due to low rent and the opportunity to get jobs. Since then more than a dozen small and big nursing agencies have sprung up here, the undercurrent frictions between the two have also led to a series of raids. Grapevine says that one of the main reasons why raids in Stoke on Trent continue to occur is when one agency finds more business and the other agency approaches the Home Office with a complaint where shift and revenue decreases.

Immigration officials, who had previously turned a blind eye to an extra hour or two of work, are now working with the goal of deporting thousands of people from the UK at any cost after realizing that Home Secretary Suella Brewerman has taken a tough stance on the issue. The two student and one of the dependant, who got arrested for working more than two hours a week, is facing deportation threats. Although the total number of hours worked in a month has not exceeded 80 hours, with a figure of 20 per week, the Home Office is not ready to accept this claim. The Home Office’s position is that there is no compromise on working more than 20 hours a week. However, a appeal filed by a Malayalee lawyer has said that the matter should be reconsidered on humanitarian grounds. It remains to be seen whether the Home Office will take a favourable stand in this regard.

However, the fact that when the woman on a student visa was arrested, her husband, who was on a dependent visa, was also arrested is a warning to many who come on student visas and violate the law. According to the Home Office, her husband’s dependent visa was also cancelled after she violated the student visa law. With this, both of them have been shifted to the detention centre. The phones of the trio are in the possession of the officials. It is learnt that the officials have sought information from other students who were staying at the place where they were arrested. With this, more raids are also expected at Stoke-on-Trent.
