“Gods Own Country” tag would suit Tamil Nadu more than Kerala as TN destination of all gods: Minister

LONDON Nov 11: “God’s Own Country” is the tagline of Kerala Tourism. It is a phrase meaning an area, region or place supposedly favoured by God. However, Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister Dr Mathiventhan has a different take on this.

Speaking on the occasion of the World Travel Market London (WTM), held in London last week, he opined looking at Sasi Nair from Neil Travels in the meeting, and said that the “tagline “Gods Own Country’ would be aptly suited to Tamil Nadu rather than Kerala. This is because we have more Gods than Kerala”. The minister made the comments to woo tourists to his home state.

The minister has a point as Tamil Nadu has more temples than any other states of India. Tamil Nadu is home to more than 40,000 Hindu temples and is aptly called “the land of temples” by media. Many are at least 800 years old and are found scattered all over the state.

Tamil Nadu is well renowned for its temple towns and heritage sites, hill stations, waterfalls, national parks, local cuisine, natural environment and wildlife. In addition to the long history of the Tamil people, Tamil Nadu is famous for its temples, festivals, and celebration of the arts. The Hindu temples and monuments at Mamallapuram have become famous tourist attractions.

As per a report by Union Tourism Ministry, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu had the highest numbers of foreign tourist visits, with 1.26 million and 1.23 million, respectively in 2021.
