ULEZ expansion going ahead from Aug 29 after high court ruling: Check your vehicle if it is compliant

LONDON July 30: The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has officially been given the High Court ruling to go ahead this August meaning boroughs outside of London will now be introduced to new rules regarding the cars they use.

The high court has dismissed a legal challenge by five Conservative-led councils against the expansion of London’s ultra-low emission zone (Ulez). The outer London boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Harrow and Hillingdon, along with Surrey county council, launched legal action in February.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan immediately confirmed he would expand the zone as planned on 29 August. As of August 29th 2023, all new Ulez zones will be active.

Generally, any petrol car manufactured after January 2006 will be Ulez exempt and any diesel vehicle manufactured after 2016 will be too. You can check if your vehicle is compliant here.

Ulez operates 24 hours a day, midnight to midnight, every day of the year, except Christmas Day (25 December).

Transport for London (TfL) has estimated that on an average day about 160,000 cars and 42,000 vans that use London’s roads would be liable for the fee.

Vehicles are charged if they do not comply with the current European emission standards. This depends on how much nitrogen dioxide a vehicle omits.

For diesel cars and vans to avoid the charge they must generally have been registered from 2016, while most petrol models registered from 2006 are exempt.

Drivers can check the status of their vehicle on the TFL site and see if they need to pay by entering its registration number here.

Drivers will not be charged if they are parked within an ultra-low emission zone or on days where they do not drive.
