SALFORD (Greater Manchester) March 3: The Students’ Union in each UK university runs elections so you can choose who should be the next group of students to represent you and be your voice.

Elected students help to improve the student experience in the respective university, set the direction of the Students’ Union, decide on student policy and run campaigns and projects to improve students’ lives. They also lobby the University to ensure change happens on the things you care about.

University of Salford in Greater Manchester has a long history of welcoming international students from all around the world. India is no exception – as applications from India represent approximately 25 per cent of the total number of international applications they receive. On campus, the Indian Student Society organises cultural and social events for students and staff who have an interest in India.

Now, we have a Keralite student Rishi Prem contesting for the position of president in the forthcoming elections at the University of Salford. He is the only candidate from India who is running for this position.

Speaking to this website, Rishi says that he wants to do something that will help improve the difficulties faced by the Indian students in the UK.

“My aim is not just to help the Keralite students but to help improve the lives of all international students”, he says.

Rishi is at present a student at University of Salford doing MSc in Safety Health and Environment.

Rishi graduated in 2017 in Engineering from Anna University in Chennai. He finished his matriculation from Sainik School in Thiruvananthapuram. He is a native of Kollam in Kerala.

Rishi’s voice is for “Vote for Action, Vote for Welfare”.

Rishi’s objectives are to bring in cheaper accommodation, Tier Two job visa placement cell, free sports and gym, more scholarships and many more welfare measures.

“My objectives are the common necessity of majority of the students and it’s definitely achievable. I know this from my active student interactions for the past year. Students are facing hardship in finding affordable accommodation near university.

“There is no bridge between Tier 2 visa sponsoring companies and international students which is crucial for their career prospects in UK.

“Sports and Gym is not free and most of the students are facing financial hardships. Some students find it hard during Covid to pay their fees. I want to remove all this hardships faced by student and bring in more welfare measures”, Rishi says.

Voting opens on 4th March and ends on 8th March through the university website.
