Indian Restaurant in UK Fined £44,000 After Customer With Nut Allergy Suffers Reaction

LONDON April 30: An Indian restaurant in Uxbridge has been fined nearly £44,000 after a customer with a nut allergy suffered a severe allergic reaction and required hospital treatment.

The incident occurred at Javitri, located in Hillingdon in London, after the customer consumed a meal containing undeclared allergens. Following the complaint, Hillingdon Council launched an investigation on June 26 last year and uncovered serious lapses in the restaurant’s allergen control procedures.

The company behind Javitri, pleaded guilty to five food safety offences at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, April 22. The business was fined £35,000, ordered to pay a £5,000 victim surcharge, and £3,816 in prosecution costs, said reports

Council officers found multiple failures during their investigation, including improperly stored nuts in the kitchen, inadequate menu descriptions, and uncertainty among staff regarding recipes—despite recent allergen training provided by the Food Standards Agency.

The council issued a detailed report outlining necessary improvements, such as clearly identifying all ingredients and allergens in each dish. However, a follow-up inspection on July 16 revealed little progress. As a result, an improvement notice was issued, demanding accurate allergen information be submitted by August 13.

When officers returned on August 14, the restaurant provided an allergen menu intended for customers—but it remained confusing and inaccurate, continuing to pose a risk to allergy sufferers.
