UK Residency Rules Will Be Reformed, Confirms Minister

LONDON May 25: The UK government will reform the current rules governing settlement status, as outlined in the white paper published on 12 May 2025, Minister Seema Malhotra has confirmed.

Responding to a question last week from MP James Naish, Malhotra stated: “Settlement in the UK is a vital step toward British citizenship and comes with lifelong benefits. It also plays a key role in helping individuals integrate and contribute to both their local communities and the country as a whole.

We intend to reform the existing settlement rules to ensure that individuals must earn their right to this privileged immigration status through sustained, meaningful contributions to the UK.

A public consultation on the proposed ‘earned settlement’ scheme will take place later this year. Full details, including the specific immigration routes to which the new rules will apply, will be released following the consultation.”
