New Academy to Train Future Healthcare Workers Launched in Kent

LONDON May 14: A new Health and Wellbeing Academy has been launched in Kent to help train the next generation of healthcare workers.

The initiative is a collaboration between Canterbury Christ Church University and Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust (KMPT), aiming to strengthen the link between education and frontline healthcare.

The academy will provide student nurses and health professionals with hands-on clinical training, enhanced by simulation-based learning, collaborative curriculum design, and research aimed at improving health outcomes in the region.

One key aspect of the Academy involves KMPT staff actively participating in student training within the University’s simulation suites. These facilities offer realistic, hands-on clinical scenarios in a safe environment, helping students gain confidence and practical experience before entering real-world healthcare settings. KMPT staff will also benefit by exploring new ways to integrate their expertise into the academic environment and contribute to student learning.

Early progress includes the creation of several joint posts, bringing together expert educators and healthcare professionals. Notably, Professor Andy Cruickshank, Chief Nurse at KMPT, has been appointed Visiting Professor at Canterbury Christ Church University to further strengthen this partnership.

Professor Cruickshank expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating: “My colleagues and I believe that simulated environments allow students to develop their skills and decision-making in a safe, supportive way. This type of training reflects real-life clinical settings, which ultimately improves patient care, fosters teamwork, and raises professional standards.”

Professor Jane Perry, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Social Care, added: “We are thrilled to launch the Health and Wellbeing Academy as the next step in our partnership with KMPT. It highlights our shared commitment to delivering a high-quality learning experience. With KMPT’s real-world insight enriching our nurse simulation training, we can prepare our students to meet the healthcare challenges of tomorrow.”

The Health and Wellbeing Academy was officially launched on International Nurses Day, a fitting tribute to the dedication and impact of the nursing profession. The milestone was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations.
