Man Jailed for 28 Years for Attacking Keralite Nurse at UK Hospital

LONDON Feb 11: A man has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for the attempted murder of a Keralite nurse at Royal Oldham Hospital in Greater Manchester.

Romon Haque (born 29/06/1987), of Yasmin Gardens, Oldham, was sentenced on 11 February 2026 at Minshull Street Crown Court. The court imposed a total sentence of 28 years, comprising 22 years in custody followed by six years on licence.

Haque had earlier pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article and was later found guilty of attempted murder. The victim of the attack has been identified as Achamma Cherian.

The court heard that the incident occurred at around 11.30 pm on Saturday, 12 January 2025. Haque asked a nurse for medication and was told she would attend to him shortly. He then got out of his bed, approached the nurse from behind, and produced a pair of scissors concealed in his pocket.

He stabbed her three times, causing serious injuries to her face, neck, and hands. The nurse was given immediate emergency treatment and was transferred to intensive care.

Hospital staff intervened swiftly and managed to pull Haque away from the victim, preventing further harm.

Following his arrest, Haque was deemed fit to stand trial and appeared in court during hearings held in June and July last year.

Detective Sergeant Jennifer O’Brien of Greater Manchester Police’s Oldham district described the incident as a “horrific, unprovoked attack” on a healthcare worker. She praised the courage of the staff who stepped in, saying their actions prevented the situation from becoming even more serious.

“Emergency workers should never face violence from those they are trying to help,” she said, adding that she was satisfied justice had been served with Haque now behind bars.
