Keralite Student On Post Study Work Visa Found Dead in UK; Post-Mortem To Be Conducted Next Week

COVENTRY Feb 7: A 26-year-old Indian national, Vishnu Jayakumar, was found deceased in Coventry, United Kingdom, with authorities stating that no evidence of criminality has been identified at this stage.

According to a statement issued by his father, Jayakumar based in Kerala in India, Vishnu is believed to have passed away on Sunday, 1 February 2026. His body was discovered by police on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, prompting a police-led investigation.

West Midlands Police have remained in contact with the family and have confirmed that while initial inquiries have not revealed any signs of foul play, the investigation is ongoing. The case has now been formally handed over to the Coventry Coroner’s Office, which will oversee further proceedings.

The Coroner’s Office has informed the family that a post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place next week, on either 9, 10, or 11 February 2026. Authorities have indicated that, subject to the outcome of the examination, the body is expected to be released on the same day for repatriation to India while investigations continue.

However, officials noted that if the post-mortem suggests a possible unnatural cause of death, the case may be referred back to the police for further criminal investigation. In such a scenario, the body would remain under the coroner’s authority, potentially delaying repatriation until it is no longer required for investigative purposes.

The Indian Consulate in Birmingham has extended full support to the family and is coordinating closely with both the Coroner’s Office and local police. Consular officials have confirmed they are on standby to assist with repatriation once clearance is granted.

The family has urged media outlets and the public to refrain from circulating hearsay or unverified information, citing distress caused by speculative reports. “Our family is deeply traumatised, and we respectfully request that no unnecessary or speculative reporting be published,” the statement said.

Vishnu is from Attingal in Thiruvananthapuram district.

Further updates are expected from the family following the post-mortem examination.
