Keralite nurse in UK suffers life-changing injuries after being stabbed by patient while at work

LONDON Jan 15: Achamma Cherian, a 57-year-old nurse working at the Royal Oldham Hospital’s acute medical unit in Manchester, was stabbed on Saturday at approximately 23:30 GMT. The suspect, identified as Roman Haque, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article, as the nurse is left with life-changing injuries.

Achamma, believed to be a mother of two, has reportedly overcome the emergency crisis and is currently undergoing treatment. The alleged attacker appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where he identified himself as Mohammed Roman Haque. He is scheduled to appear next at Minshull Street Crown Court on February 18 and has been remanded in custody.

Achamma’s colleague described her as an “experienced” nurse and a “lovely lady” who has been working at the hospital for about ten years. Cherian is also known as an “active and popular member” of the Indian Association Oldham (IAO).

The incident has drawn condemnation from UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who stated that nurses should be able to care for patients without fear of violence. Local government minister Oldham West MP Jim McMahon called the attack “senseless.”

The Greater Manchester Police confirmed that they are not looking for any other suspects in connection with the incident and assured that there is no wider threat to the public. However, the attack has raised concerns about the safety of healthcare workers and the potential risks they face on the job.

According to reports, the incident occurred after the patient became angry about waiting times, with one nurse claiming that the attack happened following a disagreement over wait times to be seen by medical staff.
