25-year-old Keralite charged with murder of Aravind in London: UUKMA to help

LONDON June 18: Aravind Sasikumar (38), a Keralite was stabbed to death in London by his flatmate on June 16 at 1.31 am on Friday. A post-mortem examination carried out on Friday confirmed Aravind Sasikumar died as a result of stab wounds to the chest.

On Saturday, June 17, Salman Salim, 25 of Southampton Way, another Keralite, was charged with murder, police said. He appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on the same day and was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on June 20.

No further details about him have been released. According to preliminary reports, Aravind was stabbed to death during an argument at his residence.

Aravind’s younger brother, who lived in Northampton was requested by MET police to arrive in London on Friday and he was briefed about the incident, but did not specify the motives that led to the murder or the cause of his death. Aravind’s brother has now returned to Northampton.

The police have asked his brother to come on Monday for things including body identification. The Malayalee youths who were taken away by the police as witnesses are yet to be released. The body of Aravind is currently at St Thomas Hospital in London.

Aravind is the son of Sasikumar and Sreedevi who live in Panampilly Nagar in Kochi. Hailing from Kayamkulam, the family came to Ernakulam as part of their work and settled down. Aravind had come to the UK on a student visa several years ago. When it expired, he later switched to another visa. He died while he was about to move to another visa.

A police spokesman said: “On arrival, officers located a man, aged in his 30s, suffering from stab injuries. Despite treatment from medical professionals, the man sadly died at the scene.

“His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.” A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We sent numerous resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, medics in two fast response cars, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer.

“We also dispatched a trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance, which consisted of a paramedic and a doctor in a car.

“Sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a man was pronounced dead at the scene.” Harriet Harman, the MP for Camberwell and Peckham, described the death as a “horrific murder” and passed on her “deepest sympathy to the bereaved family”.
