Keralite councillor floats plan to celebrate September as Kerala Heritage Month in UK

CROYDON Sept 22: Cllr Dr Manju Shahul-Hameed, community leader and former Mayor of Croydon, has announced a proposal to formally recognise September as Kerala Heritage Month across the UK.

The press note said, “the vision was first shared during Kerala cultural celebrations, inspired by Onam—the state’s most significant festival—which symbolises unity, equality and prosperity. Today, Onam is marked not only by community organisations but also by businesses and NHS Trusts across the UK, reflecting the growing recognition of Kerala’s values and contributions, said a press note sent to this website.

“Kerala Heritage Month will be an annual opportunity to celebrate the Kerala community’s rich culture, enterprise and vital contributions to health, social care, business, education and public life. With the support of many organisations and community leaders already backing this initiative, the month will highlight the Kerala diaspora’s important role in strengthening boroughs, cities and communities nationwide”

“By dedicating September to Kerala Heritage Month, we will create space to showcase cultural heritage, recognise achievements and inspire future generations. It will be a time to build stronger, more connected communities by honouring Kerala’s values of inclusivity, service and innovation”, added the note.

Cllr Dr Manju Shahul-Hameed said: “Kerala Heritage Month is about more than cultural pride. It is about recognising the extraordinary contributions of the Kerala community in shaping Britain’s social, civic and economic life. Through Kerala Heritage Month, we can celebrate heritage while building unity and opportunity for all.”
