YouTube launches verification system for providing healthcare advise due to disinformation online

LONDON Sept 9: YouTube has launched a verification system for healthcare workers in the UK as it battles disinformation online, BBC reported.

YouTube has started the process of verifying healthcare workers giving advise in the UK as part of its efforts to curb youtube channels that provide health-related misinformation. The verification process is part of efforts to prevent the spread of misinformation through their platform. Those who succeed in the verification will get a special badge.

YouTube has started this verification process as many people in the name of healthcare workers have started YouTube channels and some of them are spreading and presenting health-related facts in a wrong way for reach. The number of people taking videos on health and sexual issues has surged due to the realization that youtube has a good viewership for health videos.

YouTube Health has warned its channels that they should use YouTube only for educational purposes, but that no one should use their platform in exchange for medical advice from the GP.

Vishal Virani, who manages health content on YouTube, said, “With an increasing number of people getting to know health information through YouTube, it is a matter of serious concern and imperative to ensure the accuracy of those running such YouTube channels.
