LONDON July 22: The UK government has asked all European citizens in the UK to register with EU Settlement scheme before June 30, 2021. The European Union Settlement Scheme has been created for Swiss citizens as well as EU, EEA citizens and their family members living in the UK who want to stay in the country after Britain leaves the EU.
The scheme grants eligible applicants with settled and pre-settled status, enabling them to continue living in the UK after June 30, 2021.
The government of the UK has stressed that the EEA citizens and their family members who have been granted pre-settled or settled status have secured their rights in UK law, ensuring that, whether in four or 40 years, they will have the evidence they need to continue living and working in the UK.
Those applying through this scheme will (if they are eligible) receive either Pre-Settled Status or Settled Status. Pre-Settled Status is awarded to applicants who have been in the UK continuously for less than five years.
Settled Status is given to those who have been in the UK continuously for five or more years, and hence already meet the criteria for permanent residence.
Family members of EU citizens
Non-EU family members living in the UK by 31 December 2020 also need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme. Close family members who are not living in the UK by 31 December 2020 will be able to join their EU family member in the UK at any point in the future, as long as the relationship still exists.
Close family members are: spouses, civil partners, unmarried partners and dependent children, grandchildren, parents and grandparents. Family members do not need to be from the EU, they can come from anywhere in the world.
While the scheme is open for applications until 30th June 2021, this is only for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens who are living in the UK as of 31st December 2020.
A Home Office spokesperson said: “There have already been over 3.6 million applications to the EU Settlement Scheme and, with a year to go, there is still plenty of time to apply.
The vast majority of people find it easy to apply online, but for those who need extra help a wide range of support has continued to be available seven days a week throughout the coronavirus pandemic.”
The official said applicants can phone the EU Settlement Resolution Centre for over-the-phone support while others can use an app designed for the identity stage of their application.
