LONDON Aug 9: A UK Malayalee from Newham in London was on holidays in Sathamcotta in Kerala’s Kollam district. He found a rash around his eyes and he approached a skin specialist at a local hospital in Kollam.

They took his blood samples and details of him which also included about him being a Keralite based in the UK and on holidays in Kerala.

He was sent away after initial diagnosis and prescription. However, later after reaching home, in the middle of the night health authorities knocked on his door at his Kerala home and told him that they are putting him in quarantine.

Although the Keralite disagreed to the diagnosis they insisted that he goes into quarantine as he has been diagnosed by a doctor and also him being someone who has arrived from abroad.

According to the Keralite, the doctor’s face changed when she heard that he is from the UK.

The UK Malayalee pleaded with the health authorities but they picked him up and put him in Punalur Taluk Hospital for two days and two nights.

According to the Kollam Control Room, they acted on the basis of the report from the doctor in Sasthamcotta.

According to the UK Malayalee, the doctor didn’t have any reasons to believe that he was suffering from monkey pox and that he should have been put in quarantine.

After two harrowing nights in a government hospital with poor sanitation he was later declared clear with no signs or symptoms of monkey pox.

The UK Malayalee, who is now back in the UK, is initiating actions through relevant departments to raise the matter with authorities for giving him such a harrowing experience while in Kerala.
