CROYDON Nov 8: The City of London is all set to hold a Gurupooja this year for Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar, one of the titans of Carnatic classical music and an ardent devotee of Lord Guruvayurappan.
The eighth London Chembai Music Festival, is modelled on the Chembai Sangeetholsavam, an annual Carnatic music festival held in Guruvayur by the Guruvayur Devaswom in memory of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar.
Chembai had conducted the festival in the temple town in Kerala on his own for about 60 years. He used to invite anyone interested in Carnatic music, from small children to renowned musicians of his time, to perform at the festival.
The Guruvayur Devaswom decided to take ownership of this festival after Chembai’s death in 1974, renaming it as Chembai Sangeetholsavam in his memory.
About 3000 musicians participate in this festival every year and it is held for about 12–15 days culminating on the Guruvayur Ekadasi day, when all the musicians sing five favorite songs of Chembai and also the Pancharatna Kritis of Thyagaraja.
The festival is getting more popular year after year and its duration has increased from three days in its inception to about 12–15 days now.
The London Chembai Music Festival is sponsored by the London Hindu Aikyavedhi, which works for the realization of a Guruvayoorappa temple in London.
Many music lovers, including beginners and those who have just finished singing, will perform at the music festival on November 27 from 5pm at the Croydon West Thornton Community Auditorium.
Organizers said they were compelled to hold this year’s music festival at the monthly Satsanga venue itself, as Covid standards had to be met in view of previous year’s music festivals, which were attended by hundreds of artistes and thousands of spectators.
Some of the highlights of the music festival will be the performance by Dr Vani Jayaram, Idea Star Singer contestant, music performance by students of SVARA-Siddhi Vikas Arts Academy lead by Malavika Anil Kumar, violin concert performed by Sruthimanolaya Music School.
Bangalore Pratap and violinist Ratheesh Kumar Manoharan will perform at the festival.
The music festival will start with the music of the children of London Hindu Aikyavedi and will end with the chanting of Thyagaraja Pancharatna.
After the musical performance, Murali Iyer will perform the Deeparadhana followed by Annadanam.
As usual, the organizers, led by blessed playback singer Rajesh Raman, are gearing up for the eighth year of the festival, which will be held in London to commemorate Gurupavanapuri in the fullness of Guru-Govinda devotion.
The organizers said that the absence of Late Thekkumuri Haridas, the all-in-all of London Hindu Aikya Vedi, could never be filled.
The organizers would like to extend a warm welcome to all devoted music lovers in the UK to this devotional music festival venue.
