MUMBAI Feb 6: Lata Mangeshkar, one of India’s most cherished and influential singers, has died in Mumbai at the age of 92.
The cultural icon had been admitted to hospital in January after testing positive for Covid-19, with Dr Pratit Samdani, the doctor who was treating her at Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital, confirming she died of multiple-organ failure.
Mangeshkar’s career spanned a remarkable 73 years, and her remarkable output of thousands of songs in 36 languages saw her dubbed the ‘Nightingale of India’ and ‘Melody Queen’.
Her work in Bollywood, India’s Hindi film industry, gained her status as a national icon, with Mangeshkar considered the benchmark to which all playback singers – who pre-record the songs for Bollywood stars to lip-sync to – aspired.
