THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Nov 24: Nithya V Raman (35), a Thiruvananthapuram native and a resident of Boston in the US, has won from District 4 City Council. Nithya won after defeating David Ryu, who was Council representative for 17 years.
Nithya won after securing 56 percent of the total votes polled in the 15-member council.
Nithya is the granddaughter of Kottakkakam native K Ramayyar, a retired postmaster and daughter of R Venkitaraman, who worked in Keltron. Venkitaraman went to the USA to pursue his higher studies and later settled down in Boston. He is now the CEO of a company called Vertex. Nithya’s mother Sudha, is a Thrissur native and a former employee of Indian Overseas Bank. Nithya grew up in Kerala until the age of 6.
Nithya Raman is an American urban planner, activist, and Los Angeles City Council member-elect for the 4th District. Nithya co-founded a homelessness nonprofit in Los Angeles and was the executive director of Time’s Up Entertainment.
Nithya Raman received her undergraduate education at Harvard University, before continuing on to graduate school at MIT. She holds a master’s degree in urban planning from the latter.
After living in the United States for many years, Nithya returned to her home country of India and founded the research firm Transparent Chennai. The firm’s goal was to improve sanitation in the city of Chennai. Prior to running for City Council, she founded and headed a homelessness nonprofit in Los Angeles and was the executive director of Time’s Up Entertainment.
Nithya Raman was born in India and emigrated to the United States with her family at the age of six.
Raman resides in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. She is married, and has two children. She married Hollywood scriptwriter Vali Chandrasekaran. Her brother Akash V Raman is an IT Engineer in the USA.
