TOKYO Aug 5: In one of the most memorable days in Indian sports history, the men’s hockey team on Thursday defeated Germany to win the bronze medal at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.
This is India’s first ever hockey medal at the Games since 1980 and 12th overall that include eight golds, a silver and three bronze medals.
Indian men’s team defeated Germany 5-4 in the bronze medal match to end the country’s 41-year wait of an Olympic medal in hockey on Thursday.
After being down 3-1, India fought back to win the bronze medal match 5-3, a first Olympic medal in #Hockey after 40 years.
Germany started the fourth quarter with an early goal but the Indian defence managed to keep their nerves as they saw off a flurry of attacks from the Germans in the last few minutes to ensure a podium finish.
Congratulations to each & every member of the hockey contingent on winning the #Bronze for India!

Sachin Tendulkar Tweeted: Congratulations to each & every member of the hockey contingent on winning the #Bronze for India! A fantastic hard fought win…The penalty corner save by Sreejesh in the dying moments of the game was amazing.
One of the comments on Twitter trended: “Hats off, Mr. PR Sreejesh. That final save off the PC was stuff of legends. And he indeed is one. This entire team is. To come back from 1-3 down to win in that fashion is incredible. So is this triumph. A major part of the current Indian generation would’ve only heard of the great hockey tales. Now, they get to see one. That’s the significance of this win”.
PR Sreejesh’s wife Aneesha on Thursday said she hasn’t met her husband in 6 months and is just looking forward to meeting the hockey hero when he returns from home Tokyo. Sreejesh has been one of the pillars of the India men’s hockey team and the veteran goalkeeper rose to the occasion, playing a key role in their bronze-medal winning campaign at the Tokyo Olympics.
Speaking to India Today, Aneesha said she is looking forward to going on a long holiday with Sreejesh. She said she had no doubt in her mind that India will return with a hockey medal from the Olympics and that the bronze medal-winning moment is the happiest in their lives so far.
Sreejesh has been part of several close results with the senior hockey team in the past. Considered one of the best shot-stoppers, if not the best, in the world, Sreejesh gave it his all on the field at the Games as India needed their custodian to thwart off attacks.
Sreejesh’s wife also said that she has never been under as much stress as she was in the final few minutes of the Bronze medal match on Thursday. Aneesha expressed delight, saying Sreejesh’s biggest dream was to win an Olympic medal for India.
“This time, I was sure that he will bring a medal for us. I have seen work towards it. It was his greatest dream. He wanted to win an Olympic medal for India. That has come true today. This is the happiest moment in our lives,” Aneesha said.
“He was confident. I asked him (before the bronze medal match), he said: ‘This is our day, we will win it’.
