LOS ANGELES March 28: American actor Will Smith won the Oscar for best actor at the 94th Academy Awards, held at the Dolby theatre in Los Angeles. The Awards ceremony was marred with an incident where Will Smith appeared to smack presenter Chris Rock in the face with an open hand and shouted a vulgarity at the comedian for making a joke about his wife’s appearance at the Oscars ceremony.
Presenter Rock made a joke about the hairstyle of Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith that referenced the movie GI Jane in which actress Demi Moore shaved her head. Pinkett Smith suffers from the hair loss condition, alopecia.
Smith, who later won best actor for ‘King Richard,’ walked on stage and slapped Rock in what at first appeared to be a scripted joke. But the mood turned somber moments later when Smith, back in his seat, shouted back, ‘Keep my wife’s name out of your f*****g mouth’
Smith’s portrayal of Richard Williams in King Richard (2021) got him the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, British Academy Film Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actor.
Will Smith later apologised saying: “I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. I hope the academy still calls me to the Oscars”.
Will, who bagged the Best Actor award, spoke about Denzel Washington’s advice to him during his acceptance speech, which Will delivered in tears.
“Denzel said to me a few minutes ago, ‘At your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you,’” Will said.
During the commercial break, Will Smith is pulled aside and comforted by Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry, who motion for him to brush it off. Will appears to wipe tears from his eyes as he sits back down with Jada, with Denzel comforting Jada and Will’s rep by his side. pic.twitter.com/uDGVnWrSS2
