U.K.’s Sheffield Hallam University Introduces Special Incentives for Indian Students

New Delhi July 30: One of the U.K.’s leading public universities, Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) is introducing new and refreshed course offerings in specialized fields such as Cancer Biology, Cyber Security and Sports Business Management.

These advanced courses are in line with SHU’s bid to foster innovation among students and help them deep dive into subjects that are constantly evolving and require fresh insights, each passing year.

Aimed towards especially attracting Indian students, SHU has also announced their Vice Chancellor’s Award which is a GBP 3,000 automatic tuition fee waiver for the September 2019/January 2020 intakes.

Indian students can also apply for the Transform scholarships as part of their January/September 2020 admissions, to win a half-fee waiver (50% discount) in postgraduate courses and for each year of an undergraduate degree.

In addition, the university is offering special incentives through sandwich courses, which are tailor-made offerings which allow students to gain work experience and practical training of up to one year, as part of their undergraduate course structure.

Talking further about the benefit of such hybrid courses, Professor Terrence Perera, Head of International Partnerships and Development, Faculty of Science, Technology and Arts says, “Such courses are extremely popular with international students, especially from India, who want to experience the overseas work environment before they make up their minds finally, about whether they want to pursue a global career or want to head back to their home country to pursue their career goals.

Almost every successful career path and business can benefit from an international perspective. Studying a degree abroad with a work placement element not only demonstrates to future employers that you possess transferable skills and can adapt to different environments and cultures but that it gives you the opportunity to network with people from all over the world. The experience is likely to open up many opportunities in the world of business and industry.”

This incentive is also in line with the U.K. government’s recent “International Education Strategy” which proposes to offer students a chance to stay in the U.K. on a work visa for a total of six months after graduation, instead of the previous three months period.

Some of the courses which SHU offers are recognized as topmost in U.K. as well as in Europe. Its MSc program in Sports Business Management course is rated 1st in the U.K. and 4th in Europe (Sports Business Postgraduate Course Rankings 2018).

The course gives a detailed understanding of the core aspects of sports business and finance. MSc in Cyber Security offered by SHU is a specialised course that equips students in ethical hacking, information security management, web application and e-commerce security and system and application security.

And Cancer Biology as a course has been designed to prepare for a career in Research in healthcare, pharmaceuticals or biotechnology, Academic research, Medical sales, Scientific writing and Consultancy.

SHU is counted amongst the top five U.K. based modern universities for research quality. With investments of more than 100 million pounds over the last five years, it has modernized its facilities to offer students with outstanding teaching and learning techniques.

Describing further investment plans for the campus and faculty, Dr. Steve Johnson, Assistant Dean (Research) at Sheffield Business School says, “Our annual income from research grants and contracts was approximately £400,000 in 2018-19 and our plan is to increase this to around £1 million over the coming 2-3 years.

The Business School will be moving into a new building in three years’ time and this building will be suitably equipped for our colleagues to undertake high quality research. We will also continue to invest in recruiting high quality academic staff including a number of research leaders to add to our current complement of 18 professors and 5 Readers.”

Mostly focussed towards post-graduate courses, majority of SHU offerings are enriched by long-established industry relations and corporate tie-ups that help students strengthen their career prospects – both as global professionals, as well as successful entrepreneurs.
