THIRUVANNATHAPURAM Aug 16: Many students are stranded in Aranmula Engineering College as the areas is nearly inundated. Some of them have been airlifted in helicopters to Thiruvananthapuram. Many including 33 students and one warden are still stranded in the college hostel.

The ground floor of the ladies hostel is submerged by water. Air force and rescue workers have started attempts to rescue the first and second year students. But third year students are still stranded in the college.

The unexpected flooding took place in areas adjacent to Pamba river at Ranni in Pathanamthitta. About ten families are also engulfed by flood water in this area. Among them, seven from a family were airlifted to Thiruvananthapuram in army chopper a few hours ago.

The rescued families said that more people are stranded in Ranni.

Meanwhile, disconnecting electricity supply to these areas to avoid further danger has thrown the communication networks out of gear. This has been a big hurdle in rescue works. However, attempts are going on to rescue rest of the stranded people.
