NEW DELHI July 23: According to reports, the latest name we hear among the list of former players who are seeking to become India’s head coach is Mahela Jayawardane. It is heard that the former Sri Lankan batsman has applied for the position recently.
Jayawardane, who is one of the leading run-scorers of Sri Lanka, is currently the head coach of IPL champions Mumbai Indians. He had also served as a consultant coach for the England cricket team.
It is believed that his records both as a player and coach will be greatly considered by the Cricket Advisory Committee led by Kapil Dev before taking the final decision on the next coach.
Other prominent names who have applied for the position of Team India’s head coach are former Australian all-rounder Tom Moody and former Indian coach Gary Kirsten.
Though it was heard that Ravi Shastri’s term as Indian coach would come to an end by the World cup, the BCCI later decided to extend his term till the end of the West Indies tour starting next month.
