Inspired by true incident ‘Chilappol Daivam’ is an introspection into some of our deadly judgments (Watch Film)

LONDON April 28: As an important step in becoming a doctor, medical students must take the Hippocratic Oath. The Hippcratic Oath reads: “Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God”.

When the protagonist in this short film titled ‘Chilappol Daivam’ (Sometimes God) reads out the Hippocratic oath, it is a reaffirmation and reminder to each one of us that they do live by it. But it begets the question on how much of that is given credence to by us these days, or if there is any introspection into how many doctors’ lives are lost due to the impunity we enjoy from some of the erroneous judgments we make at certain times leading to injurious consequences.

Inspired by a true incident (suicide of a doctor), ‘Chilapol Daivam’ dwelves into the mental health of doctors and how isolation and hostile condemnation can wreak havoc in their lives.

The director uses the traditional ritual art form of dance worship Theyyam to convey the story. People consider Theyyam as a channel to a God and they thus seek blessings from Theyyam. The protagonist here is dressing up as a Theyyam. The subtle reminder through the short film is for doctors not to be seen as God but rather see them as humans.
