Ghazal singer Umbayee no more

Kochi Aug 2: Popular Malayalam Ghazal singer and composer Umbayee passed away on Wednesday evening at a private hospital in Aluva around 4.40 pm.

He was 68. The burial will take place at Kalvathy Juma Masjid at Fort Kochi at 4 pm on Thursday.

Umbayee is known for his soulful renditions of old Malayalam songs, ghazal being his forte.

Born in Mattanchery near Kochi in 1952, Umbayee’s real name was Ibrahim. He worked as a trainee electrician in Mumbai after his schooling while nurturing his taste for music.

He released his first album in 1988. He has released more than ten Ghazal albums and was associated with prominent music directors and lyricists in Kerala.

Umbayee has composed music for poems written by literary stalwarts like ONV Kurup and Sachidhanandhan. He has also sung Ghazals of legends like Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh.

He has composed music for the film ‘Novel’ along with M Jayachandran.
