KOCHI June 24: Actor Prithviraj’s post on his Facebook page announcing his latest film project ‘Vaariyamkunnan’ has irked some who disagree with glorifying Kunjuahammed Haji, the man who became the face of the 1921 Malabar revolution.
Prithviraj will enact the role of Variyankunnathu Kunjahammed Haji, a self-made Sultan who established his own parallel government and formed his own army.
The film will be directed by Ashiq Abu, who has previously directed Virus and Mayanadhi.
In his Facebook post Prithviraj wrote: “He stood up against an empire that ruled a quarter of the world. Etched out his own country with an army that waged a never before war against the British.
Though history was burned and buried, the legend lived on! The legend of a leader, a soldier, a patriot. A film on the man who became the face of the 1921 Malabar revolution. #Vaariyamkunnan. Filming begins in 2021.
On the 100th anniversary. #1921 #MalabarRevolution #1921Revolution #CompassMovies #OPMcinemas Vaariyamkunnan”.
However, several so called social media activists have criticised Prithviraj for accepting this role and also abused his parents.
The actor hasnt commented but several film directors are now coming forward to defend Prithviraj and fend off the criticism.
