LONDON October 22: The Covid pandemic was life changing to many with priorities for people and organisations changing based on the income and expenditure. In December 2019 Malayalee Association of UK (MAUK) in the UK had taken on the objective of helping a poor labourer family to have their own home.

The MAUK Board, on request from a social worker Jose Mathew from Kerala, agreed to take on the project of helping to build a house for Nirmala Rajan, a 64-year old labourer in Kazhakkuttam.

Nirmala lives with her 67 year old husband who suffers from poor health, her son, who has physical impairments and ten other members of her extended family, including teenage girls, in a dilapidated house with a makeshift roof.

Jose Mathew arranged a plan to be drawn free-of-charge. The building was built on a 705 square feet house on the only 4.5 cent land they own. This is the only land that this family of 13 have to their name.

Jose managed the project on behalf of MAUK.

MAUK directors visited the project throughout the whole works and finally the whole project came to an end with the key hand over ceremony performed by Thiruvananthapuram Mayor K Sreekumar on 19th October 2020. The key hand-over ceremony was attended by MAUK members Satheesh Padmanabhan and Suresh Baskaran on 19 October 2020.

Organisations like this are many in the UK who offer support and solace to the downtrodden community in Kerala at these testing times.

MAUK’s actions and efforts are laudable as it all comes at such a difficult period in the history of the world where the less unfortunate ones need the attention and care most.

Encouraged by this success, MAUK has now embarked on building two more homes for families in similar situations; in Konni and Chengunnur in Kerala.
