It’s official: Nipah outbreak in Kerala not caused by bat

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM May 26: An official clarification has come that bat is not the reason for the outbreak of Nipah at Perambra in Kozhikode.
The official announcement came on Friday after the lab test reports from the high security lab in Bhopal was available. In the test conducted on the blood of the bats caught from the well of the first victim in Kerala, the presence of Nipah virus was not found.    
Besides the blood sample of bats, that of pigs and cattle was also sent for test. The Animal Welfare board has informed more tests will be needed to find out the source of virus.
More samples will be collected on Monday and sent for test. Though the test result is a thing of respite, there is still anxiety among the people.  
The result that has come pertains to the test conducted on the secretions and blood samples of bats that eat insects. The test result of blood samples of bats that eat fruits is yet to arrive.  
Meanwhile, the Animal Welfare Board said they have started collecting the blood samples of big bats.
