NEW DELHI Jan 5: Lt General Sharat Chand, a Keralite, has been appointed as Deputy Chief of Army Staff. He has been the chief of South West Command under which Rajasthan and Punjab regions are also included.
Sharat Chand was appointed at the post from which Left General Bibin Rawat had resigned. He is a native of Kottarakkara in Kollam district. Sharat Chand started his official life in Garhwal Rifles in 1979.
An alumnus of Sainik School, Kazhakootam (Trivandrum), National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, Pune and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, he is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, the Higher Command Course and the National Defence College, New Delhi.
In a military career spanning almost 37 years, the officer has participated in many active combat leadership roles at every stage of command in the Army.
He took part in UN’s Somlia Mission and Indian peace-keeping force’s operation in Sri Lanka. He has won service medal and special service medal.
