Sourav Ganguly surprised by Cricket Advisory Committe's urgency

Mumbai July 12: Sourav Ganguly was stumped after coming to know that the Vinod Rai-led Committee of Administrators (COA) wanted the Cricket Advisory Committe (CAC) to announce the name of Indian cricket team’s next coach on Tuesday itself.

“The COA was party to this decision (to defer the announcement). Need to speak with them to figure out what has changed. I don’t know what is the hurry when there is time,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by India Today.

Reports emerged that the COA want the CAC, comprising Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, to name the coach on Tuesday.

However, Ganguly has asserted that Indian captain Virat Kohli would be consulted while selecting the new national coach.

“We respect his (Virat’s) decision. At the end of the day it is his team, he is going to lead the team. He (Virat) will be consulted and no, he will not be the main person and he doesn’t want to be the main person.”

He also said that he will speak with Vinod Rai, the head of the CAC and clear the confusion. “All that was announced yesterday was with everyone’s permission and everybody was on board. He (Rai) has got the right (to ask us).

The reason we wanted to (hold back) was because Virat is on a holiday to America, and you don’t want to disturb him in the break. If he is available on the phone, we will talk to him.”

This came after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) deferred naming the coach for the Indian cricket team on Monday.

Ganguly told reporters on Monday evening that they were in “no hurry” to name Anil Kumble’s replacement.
